Maintenance

Your Air Conditioner Has Worked All Summer. Now You’re Asking It to Heat Your Home.

Cyprus air conditioning has no real off-season. Give your system a fresh start before winter heating — and discover why autumn makes sense for a new installation.

Autumn is a practical time to prepare your home’s air conditioning for its next season of work

The remote has barely left the coffee table all summer. Your air conditioner has cooled hot bedrooms, busy living rooms and the afternoon heat coming through the windows. Then, one evening, the tiles feel cold underfoot. You reach for the same remote and change the snowflake to the sun.

Different symbol. Same machine.

In Cyprus, air conditioning often goes straight from summer cooling to winter heating, with little more than a quieter few weeks in between. Yet the dust, dirty filters and wear accumulated through summer do not disappear when you change the setting.

Before asking your AC to warm your home, give it the attention a long cooling season deserves.

Cyprus Air Conditioning Does Not Really Have an Off-Season

Many homes in Cyprus use reverse-cycle air conditioners for both cooling and heating. These systems move heat out of the home in summer and bring heat indoors in winter. The indoor fan, filters, coils and outdoor equipment remain part of the same working system.

That makes autumn a useful maintenance window. You can address summer build-up, check that heating works and deal with developing problems before a cold evening turns a routine appointment into an urgent call.

This is about preparing for the next job your AC will do. For a more detailed room-by-room checklist, see our post-summer air conditioning service guide.

What Your AC May Be Carrying Into Winter

Months of operation move a great deal of room air through an indoor unit. Dust, lint and other particles collect on filters and can build up on coils and fan surfaces. During cooling, moisture also forms on the indoor coil and drains away through the condensate system.

Where dirt and moisture remain, conditions can support mould, bacteria and biofilm. That does not mean every unit is contaminated or that a smell proves a particular problem. It does mean that a clean-looking plastic cover tells you very little about the condition behind it.

Build-up can contribute to:

  • Musty or stale odours when the unit starts
  • Weak airflow from restricted filters, coils or a dirty fan
  • Poor comfort when the system struggles to move air and transfer heat
  • Drainage trouble where deposits restrict trays or drain lines
  • Extra noise that needs assessment rather than being dismissed as age

Turning up the temperature will not remove those deposits. Neither will masking an odour with a room fragrance.

Why Does My Air Conditioner Smell When Heating Starts?

The first use of heating after summer can make an existing odour more noticeable. Dust, dirty internal surfaces, retained moisture or a drainage issue may be involved. The source can also be elsewhere in the room, with the AC circulating that air.

A persistent musty or sour smell deserves inspection, especially if it comes with visible build-up, water marks or reduced airflow. A technician can check the filters, coil, blower and drain tray and recommend cleaning appropriate to what is actually there.

A burning or electrical smell is different: switch the system off and arrange professional diagnosis. Do not keep restarting it to see whether the smell clears. Our AC repair service can investigate faults that cleaning alone will not resolve.

After-Summer Maintenance: More Than Washing the Filters

Accessible filter care is a useful habit. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, switch off and isolate the unit as directed, and refit washable filters only when fully dry. Avoid dismantling the unit or spraying household chemicals inside it.

Professional AC servicing and deep cleaning reaches the areas that a quick filter rinse cannot. The scope should reflect the system’s condition and the work agreed in your quotation.

Filters, Coils and Indoor Fans

Filters need cleaning or replacement as appropriate. The indoor coil and fan should be inspected for deposits that restrict airflow or contribute to odours. Where deeper cleaning is needed, the engineer uses suitable access and cleaning methods while protecting electrical parts and the surrounding room.

Removing accumulated dirt and addressing mould or bacterial build-up supports a cleaner system. It is not a promise of sterile air or a guarantee that growth will never return; ongoing care and moisture control still matter.

Drain Trays and Drainage

After carrying away moisture through summer, the indoor tray and drain line should be checked for restrictions and signs of leakage. In heating mode, the outdoor unit can produce water, particularly during defrosting, so its drainage also needs a suitable route.

Water from an outdoor unit during heating is not automatically a fault. Water leaking inside the home should be investigated.

Outdoor Equipment and Overall Condition

Outdoor coils need free airflow in both seasons. Dust, leaves and coastal exposure can affect the equipment, while mounts, insulation and connections deserve attention where their condition calls for it. Leave electrical checks and refrigerant work to a qualified engineer.

Check the Heating Before You Need It Overnight

An AC that cooled the room in August has not necessarily proved that all its heating functions are working properly.

On a suitably cool day, select heat mode and a sensible temperature above the room temperature. Allow the system its normal start-up time; some units delay the indoor fan until the coil is warm. Check that it delivers warm air, responds to the controller and brings the room towards the selected temperature.

An engineer can assess airflow, temperature response, controls and outdoor operation, then investigate unusual noises, error codes or weak output. Brief pauses during defrost can be normal, depending on the weather and model. Repeated faults or a room that remains cold need attention.

Maintenance can reduce avoidable winter breakdowns by finding developing problems early. It cannot guarantee that no component will fail. The benefit is having time to act before heating becomes essential.

Why Autumn Is a Smart Time to Install or Replace AC in Cyprus

If your old system struggled through summer, autumn offers breathing room to decide what happens next. You can compare repair and replacement costs, arrange a survey and choose equipment for winter heating as well as next summer’s cooling.

A replacement is worth discussing when faults recur, comfort remains poor after proper servicing, or a significant repair makes continued investment difficult to justify. A healthy system may simply need maintenance.

Planning an installation now lets you:

  • Choose the right capacity: account for room size, glazing, insulation, orientation and how you use the space
  • Compare both seasons: consider heating and cooling performance, seasonal efficiency ratings and noise
  • Plan the installation properly: agree unit positions, pipe routes, drainage, electrical requirements and maintenance access
  • Arrange a convenient appointment: discuss current availability before next summer’s peak demand
  • Use the system this winter: a suitable reverse-cycle model can provide heating before the next cooling season arrives
Availability varies, so autumn is not a guarantee of an immediate appointment or a lower price. Its advantage is the opportunity to make an informed decision before the weather forces one. Our Cyprus home AC installation guide explains the options and process.
